Summer Food Drive

The First Lutheran Hunger Team at invites you to share your favorite foods with those in need this summer. According to HACAP, more than 1 in 9 people have food insecurity here in Eastern Iowa; and 1 in 6 children. From June 29 - July 27 we will be gathering food and funds to help alleviate this situation.

We encourage families to get involved by talking to your children about their favorite foods, and get them to donate. Children enjoy being generous, and this will give them an opportunity to participate in giving.

Liberia Doctor visit

All Services July 26-27

Dr. Minnie Ricks, Medical Director of the Phebe Hospital and School of Nursing in Liberia is coming to all worship services July 26-27 to thank us for the many newborn kids we assemble to distribute to new mothers coming out of the hospital in Liberia with absolutely nothing.  This ministry started by FLC Member and Liberian refugee Suah Borsay has grown into a large operation involving a many volunteers from our church including a member who provides factory space for storage and assembly. Each kit contains new cloth diapers, onesies, soap, a clean bath towel, and a few other items. Dr. Ricks is so impressed with our ministry that changes the direction of so many new mothers and babies that she wants to come and say "thank you" and show us how the gifts transform lives. Please help us welcome Dr. Ricks at 5 p.m. Sat. July 26 or 9 or 11 a.m. Sun. July 27.

The HACAP food BackPack Program ensures no child goes hungry and provides ready-to-eat or simple to prepare food for kids who are at home that would usually get meals at school.

These are often kids whose parents are working so they don't have transportation  to the school meal sites.

A a ministry to feed the hungry, our Hunger Team helps fulfill this program by packing
the bags of food several times a year.

Wellington Heights Community Church

First Lutheran has had a long connection and interest with the Wellington Heights neighborhood, serving people primarily through the Saturday Evening Meals Program (SEMP) and the summer lunch program in collaboration with St. Paul’s Methodist Church. FLC leadership believes that entering into a shared partnership with the Wellington Heights Community Church will serve the Gospel in many ways, both in supporting outreach into the community, and in receiving the gifts of the Spirt for reconciliation and peace from that ministry.
